Humanists = Non-quantifiable

Hi Mark,

___I like u & admire your honesty. So many others I come across are poster-children of ennui, but talk up a good facade pretending to be something else. At least u r honest. Though most think me to be 51, I am 63, my wife is 24, my friends are mostly Millennial-Generation-Y (in their 20's & early 30's), I run Halfathons, dance vigorous Collegiate-Shag, ice-skate, SCUBA-dive, rock-climb, repel, etc, etc. I am just not ready yet to call it quits and surrender to ennui. Once a Marine, always a Marine. Giving-up is NOT an option.
___#1) I know that either I + 1% of Earthniks (as a ship's rudder) do something definite to correct the course of "SS-Earth," or it's bound to be smashed upon the rocks of stupidity. I am looking for that 1% to be the vanguard with me in this undertaking. I do have a list of MEASURABLE-QUANTIFIABLE  ACTions that can be accomplished if only 1% of Earthniks would act in unison. 1 of the goals on my list is for UUA to become a recruiting dynamo and recruit 1% of Earthniks into its ranks (1% of people in every country). That many already are of UU way-of-thinking -- they just need to be found, acquainted with UU, and recruited. That is not hard -- it's EASY. If every UU would recruit just 1 new member per quarter, in 25 months 1% of Earthniks would be in the "UU-peace-corps" -- a force capable to rudder the world.
___#2) Another point in my list of objectives is to convert the UUA leadership
from a dyad (the weakest possible grouping for effective decisions)
into a triad (the strongest possible grouping):
a president + 2 counselors.
That president is to be a college graduate under 35 yrs of age, and until UUA membership hits 70-Million, a male. Yes I know that is sexist, but not every woman is a Margaret Thatcher or Golda Meir. There is a reason why the vast majority of self-made Billionaires & Millionaires are male, and why top military command is male, and why top company executives are male. Testosterone produces ACTion. Leaders need to be appointed for effectiveness not for political-correctness. Young women can be groomed for future leadership after membership hits 70-Million (1% of Earthniks).
___#3) The length of time for an issue to go through the process before UUA makes it its official declaration, is absurd. By then an issue may have ceased to be an issue & a different one may need to be quickly acted upon. The process needs to be shortened so that what took months would only take weeks. With contemporary means of comm, that is very possible.
___#4) In an Intro-to-UU class once when explaining the unification of Universalists & Unitarians, a guy asked Abi, who would the best probable group be if another unification was to take place. Abi's answer was: Religious-Science, and I happen to agree & like that answer. It would combine the weak social-action of UU's with the action-less postulating of NewThought. NewThought postulating would energize UU social-action toward MEASURABLE-QUANTIFIABLE results.
__There are other points toward doing good to help this wounded world, but there would be no point in discussing those if those above are not accomplished.

Vindawg,
From your perspective, I'm not part of the solution  (little or no action), just part of the problem (good at talking but not acting).  I have never had the capacity for a lot of reasons, to change the world, so the main activity has been talking about all of the world's ills and how to solve them, w/o doing anything substantial to achieve that better world.  I plead age and ennui.  Now, if you still want to have a discussion, let me know and we can spend (waste?)an hour or whatever talking about these things.  If that's a waste of your time, then let me know and you can move on in your world of action, and I in mine of thought and talk.

I'm all for a full-&-frank-discussion of our philosophies,
if the expected outcome is to be some MEASURABLE-QUANTIFIABLE  ACTion.

Cpl yrs back, I was very involved with Abi & many other area clerics in the IARF (International Association for Religious Freedom) which used to meet @ UU-Clearwater, monthly. As secretary of our chapter, I spent countless hours inviting & inviting all kinds of area clerics, and planning ACTivities which would serve to eliminate fundamentalist-religionist bigotry which divides people. After about a year of spinning my tires, I discovered that the clerics were more interested in discussing the contemplation of their navel rather than doing good to help this wounded world. They'd come together once a month to pat each other on the butt & express sentiments of "Why can't we all just get along?" but were never willing to ACT on any ideas which would produce some MEASURABLE-QUANTIFIABLE  ACTion.

Al-Qaeda is just 1 example of a global militant organization which operates as a network comprising a multinational army & a movement calling for a global campaign. It has carried out several attacks on targets it considers unacceptable (it ACTs). I don't think I need to site details of just how many Billions are invested in MIC (Military-Industrial-Complex) around the globe every year, preparing to destroy-things & kill-people. And while the destructive elements of humanity are well organized and perform MEASURABLE-QUANTIFIABLE  ACTion, atheists-humanists-freethinkers are only interested in discussing the contemplation of their navel. This whole world is clearly heading toward an Easter-Island-type break-down of society & ecological-disaster, and I don't see any serious ACTion being undertaken to prevent it. While the destructive forces are well organized into "phalanx-formations" & "tortoise-formations," atheists-humanists-freethinkers have a psychotic phobia of any joint-ACTion.

Vindawg,
Thanks for your note Sunday eve.  It appears you were less than pleased with the tenor and the sartorial attitudes of the audience.  You have merit to your statements that we atheist/humanist/ freethinkers of all stripes seem to be more interested in discussing the contemplation-of-our-navel rather than doing good to help this wounded world.  But there are some points on the other side of that issue.  Rather than engage in further discussion here, I'd be happy to meet with you at some point to discuss our worldviews and the strong and weak points of each.  If you'd like to sit down after the holidays for, as the politicians say, a full and frank discussion of our different philosophies, I'd be happy to do that.  If you feel that's a waste of time, I understand.
Mark
